New details on rumored Nvidia Shield successor leak out

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Rumblings of a new <a href="http://ift.tt/1pWMVTn" title="Nvidia Shield hands-on">Nvidia Shield</a> device have been going on for a few months now, and today that trend continues with more details on Nvidia’s Shield follow-up.</p><br /><p>The Global Certification Forum has posted an entry to its website for an Nvidia Shield product that’s described as a “notebook/tablet.” The device, which was certified on June 27, is listed as having cellular connectivity.</p><br /><p>A mysterious Nvidia tablet <a href="http://ift.tt/1qQBa2o" title="Nvidia Mocha benchmark results">popped up in some benchmark test results back in May</a> that may be this new Shield tablet. Codenamed “Mocha,” the device is said to have a 7.9-inch 2048×1536 display, <a href="http://ift.tt/1dJ7mPz" title="Nvidia Tegra K1 hands-on">quad-core Tegra K1 processor</a>, 7-megapixel rear and 4.8-megapixel cameras, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Android 4.4.2 is said to be powering this mysterious Mocha.</p><br /><p><a href="http://ift.tt/1pWMYi2"><img alt="nvidiamochabenchmark" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-75938" height="425" src="http://ift.tt/1pWMVTu" width="630"/> </a> </p><br /><p>While Nvidia hasn’t made any official statements regarding a new Shield device, we wouldn’t be surprised if such a product were in the pipeline. It’s likely that Nvidia would include its new Tegra K1 chip in whatever new mobile hardware that it’s cooking up, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it threw in a super high-res display to compete with other recently-released tablets.</p><br /><p>Now we just need to wait for Nvidia to come forward and spill the nitty gritty details on its new Shield device. Aujourd’hui le premier opérateur français annonce par l’intermédiaire d’un communiqué de presse laconique qu’<strong>il renonce à mettre la main sur la filiale télécom de Bouygues</strong>. « <em>Orange a exploré les possibilités de participer à une opération de consolidation du marché français des télécoms, et juge que les conditions que le Groupe avait fixées ne sont pas réunies aujourd’hui pour y donner suite</em> », peut-on lire dans ce communiqué de presse.</p><br /><p>Depuis la fin du rachat de SFR par Bouygues Telecom, la société de Martin Bouygues a été approchée successivement <a href="http://ift.tt/1kgYHDu" target="_blank">par Illiad (Free)</a> et <a href="http://ift.tt/1lEPyby" target="_blank">Orange</a>. Un temps évoquée, la rumeur de rapprochement entre Free Mobile et Bouygues Telecom a vite été enterrée pour des raisons essentiellement financières. Illiad aurait proposé entre 4 et 5 milliards d’euros pour racheter Bouygues Telecom, une somme bien trop basse pour Martin Bouygues, qui estime la valeur de sa filiale entre 7 et 8 milliards d’euros. <strong>On ne sait pas (encore ?) exactement ce qu’a proposé ensuite Orange pour mettre la main sur Bouygues Telecom</strong>. En revanche, on sait qu’une fusion potentielle entre les deux opérateurs aurait rencontré de nombreuses difficultés, la première étant la validation de l’autorité européenne des marchés financiers qui devait donner son accord.</p><br /><p><strong>Bouygues Telecom se retrouve donc pour le moment esseulé dans un marché plus concurrentiel que jamais</strong>. En difficulté financière de surcroît, Bouygues Telecom a annoncé <a href="http://ift.tt/1quMPTA" target="_blank">le 11 juin dernier</a> la mise en place d’<strong>un plan de réduction d’effectifs et de coûts</strong> qui concernera 1516 emplois, soit 17 % de ses salariés. Google officially acquires streaming music service Songza

Details of the agreement aren’t yet known, but Songza promises that there are “no immediate changes” planned for its service. However, it does say that it plans to continue to make its streaming offering “faster, smarter and even more fun to use.”</p><br /><p>Rumors about a possible Google acquisition of Songza <a href="http://ift.tt/1repJUH" title="Google Songza acquisition rumored">began swirling last month</a>. Samsung releases report on its Chinese suppliers

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Samsung has previously had problems with its suppliers, as have all companies, so it decided to investigate. The company commissioned independent inspections of 100 Chinese suppliers it uses to see how much illegal activity is going on. And sadly, the results aren’t very good.</p><br /><p>59 out of the 100 suppliers did not have proper safety equipment or monitoring systems, 33 didn’t dispose of waste properly, and more than half didn’t provide overtime hours mandated by Chinese law. There were plenty of other violations as well, but luckily, no cases of underage workers was found. Still, it’s a pretty poor situation.</p><br /><p>It’s surprising and pretty decent of Samsung to publicly release these reports, as such negative press would drive many other companies to cover it up. Let us not forget that many companies use these suppliers, but most haven’t done anything about such issues. However, it seems Samsung is dedicated to changing this. The company has worked with many suppliers before to train workers and change poor conditions, so we might see this continue on a bigger scale. Lenovo Yoga Tablet 10 HD+ software: a not-so-hot mess

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>The focus of a tablet is generally the hardware, due to its size and nature. That, however, is no excuse for overlooking the software on a tablet, which makes or breaks the experience. As we’ve reviewed the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 10 HD+, we’ve tested out the software and seen how it performed. So sit back, relax and hear all about our opinions on it. Because before you buy it, you should really hear about the software.</p><br /><p>The Yoga Tablet 10 HD+ runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, a seemingly odd decision for a new tablet. Lenovo has said that the KitKat update is rolling out, but our review unit was still on Android 4.3. Not only were we stuck on an older version of Android, but we also had to deal with Lenovo’s software overlay which was, in a word, terrible.</p><br /><p>Lenovo’s skin isn’t quite as pervasive as some, which was probably the only reason that I tolerated it without pulling my hair out. The Lenovo launcher experience is slow and clunky, with a move away from the traditional app drawer. Rather, you have multiple homescreens where all your installed apps are, like iOS, only uglier and clumsier. A heads-up to Lenovo, the app drawer is there for a reason and it’s because Android users like it.</p><br /><p>Going into quick settings and settings is like a blast from the past. The UI looks about three years old with goofy icons and rounded corners pervading the settings. The accent color is a bright green, not dissimilar to the green in Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Added on top of that, Lenovo included several of its _______it apps on the device. None of these are particularly useful and the SECUREit app in particular keeps a constant notification in the notification bar, with no discernible way to disable the feature.</p><br /><p>The Yoga 10 HD+ also has multiple sound and visual profiles that it uses. While not a bad idea, they require you to manually change them, and like SECUREit, keep a constant notification informing you of the profile you’re using. Not exactly pleasing. A multi-window feature is built into the Yoga Tablet 10 HD+. Unfortunately, few apps are compatible with it and it feels slower than most other multi-window implementations.</p><br /><p>While the hardware of the Yoga Tablet 10 HD+ held great potential, it’s crippled by a poor software experience. The software is outdated and the UI only serves to enhance that, with a slow and clunky feel throughout. It pains us to say that the software deserves a solid thumbs down, but there’s really nothing better to say about it. That’s why Google Play edition devices were created: to put stock Android on your favorite flagship hardware. This year, the only new flagship GPe device that we’ve seen so far is the <a href="http://ift.tt/1qfGw84" title="HTC One M8 Google Play edition">HTC One (M8)</a>, but that could be changing soon. <a href="http://ift.tt/1mFeo8l"><img alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 GPe" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-75899" height="300" src="http://ift.tt/1mFeo8n" width="195"/> </a> </p><br /><p>As we can see from the photo (right), brought to us by <em>@evleaks</em>, there appears to be a Samsung Galaxy S5 Google Play edition in the works. That’s unsurprising considering that last year’s Galaxy S4 had a <a href="http://ift.tt/1cmUef4" target="_blank">GPe variant</a>. One confusing aspect is that the above photo shows a Galaxy S5 running KitKat with on-screen nav buttons above the Galaxy S5′s hardware buttons. Per usual with Mini devices, specs have been trimmed down. The list includes a 4.5-inch 720p display, 1.4GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB RAM, 16GB internal memory supplemented by microSD card slot, 8-megapixel rear camera, 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, 2,100mAh battery, and Android 4.4 KitKat with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI.</p><br /><p>Like its bigger brother, the S5 Mini is IP67 dust and water resistant. In fact, several features are borrowed from the full-fledged S5, including a heart rate monitor, fingerprint scanner, and that same stippled plastic design. Samsung also made note of the fact that like the big dogs, the S5 Mini is compatible with Samsung-specific wearables.</p><br /><p>The S5 Mini is set to launch in Russia in the first half of July, and will come in four colors choices of black, white, blue, and gold. Phil Clapp, à la tête de l’association, explique au journal britannique <em><a href="http://ift.tt/V1NP7N" target="_blank">The Independant</a> </em> : « <em>Il sera demandé à nos clients de ne pas porter de Google Glass dans les salles de cinéma, que le film soit en cours de projection ou non</em> ». Selon les exploitants de salle de cinéma, 90 % des copies illégales des films sont des « screeners », des enregistrements vidéos réalisés durant les projections. Et à ce titre <strong>les Google Glass seraient un excellent outil de piratage</strong>.</p><br /><p>Pourtant, les Google Glass ne sont pas capables d’enregistrer une vidéo en continu sans tomber en panne de batterie. Un argument balayé par les exploitants de salles de cinémas, qui expliquent que les pirates n’hésitent pas à prendre des bouts de films et de les raccorder entre eux pour avoir un film complet. Soit.</p><br /><p>Google, de son côté, se dit déçu de cette mesure. <strong>Un représentant de la société a expliqué à <em>The Independant</em> qu’il espérait que les Google Glass seraient considérées comme un smartphone classique</strong>. Et d’expliquer que les utilisateurs de Google Glass repartent avec quelques conseils en tête, dont le premier est d’éteindre ses lunettes si quelqu’un le demande. Google communique beaucoup sur les usages des Google Glass.
